Aruba is Almost Perfect!
Feb 25 '01
The Bottom Line Diving in Aruba is beautiful, easily accessible, and offers a variety of sites. From wrecks to reefs, to easy shore dives, Aruba is a warm, wonderful diving destination.
Aruba's clear, turquoise water makes diving a real treat! It has the all the main factors that I consider in choosing a dive destination:
1. Good Visibility
Visibility in Aruba is very good, with 80 feet vis being about the average we have seen there. The water is fairly smooth, making for pretty easy entry and exit. It rarely rains in Aruba so you don't have to worry about the water getting stirred up from storms.
2. Warm Water
The water is warm enough that a dive skin is more than sufficient. Some dives I just wore a t-shirt over my bathing suit. We experienced water that was 80-82 degrees in September.
3. No Fear of Hurricanes
Aruba is so far south in The Caribbean Sea that it is out of the hurricane zone. After once spending a week in the Caribbean in fear of what might happen with the frequent hurricanes that were popping up that week, being in Aruba is a welcome relief. (We normally go to Aruba during hurricane season.)
4. Colorful Reefs
Aruba has plentiful reefs surrounding the island, with a variety of coral and sealife keeping them in constant, colorful motion. There are a variety of sites quickly accessible with a short boat ride. We even had a couple of very nice shore dives, as well. You don't have to worry about the reefs being miles away and enduring a long ride to get there.
5. Plenty to do when you're not underwater
Aruba has great shopping, beautiful beaches, casinos, nightlife, and even a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf course. You will never run out of anything to do while on Aruba.
The toughest part about going to Aruba to dive is to get there. American is the primary carrier. Unfortunately for me, there's not a quick way to get there from Memphis. The flights are usually pretty expensive (about $800) and are usually full pretty early. We've already booked for our September trip and the return flight we wanted was already full.
